SS-31
Elamipretide (Bendavia, MTP-131)
SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide (D-Arg-2,6-dimethyl-Tyr-Lys-Phe-NH2) developed by Stealth Biotherapeutics under the names Elamipretide and Bendavia (MTP-131). It binds the inner-mitochondrial-membrane phospholipid cardiolipin and is researched for mitochondrial dysfunction in rare disease, heart failure, and age-related metabolic decline. Phase 3 clinical trials have been conducted for Barth syndrome and other rare mitochondrial diseases. UK availability is research-tier outside clinical trial enrolment.
What the molecule is
- · Synthetic tetrapeptide containing two D-amino acids and one non-natural amino acid (2,6-dimethyl-Tyr).
- · Selectively binds cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
- · Stabilises mitochondrial cristae structure and electron-transport-chain function in preclinical work.
- · Developed by Stealth Biotherapeutics, with Hazel Szeto as principal scientific architect.
What the literature shows
- · Phase 3 trial data in Barth syndrome (TAZPOWER trial).
- · Phase 2 and 3 trial data in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.
- · Phase 2 trial data in age-related macular degeneration.
- · Animal-model evidence for ischaemia-reperfusion protection.
UK regulatory status
- · Not a controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
- · Not scheduled under the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016.
- · No UK marketing authorisation as a medicine.
- · Available in the UK only via clinical trial enrolment when a trial is open.
- · Research-use-only framing for non-trial UK sale.
